I’ve always held some resentment for people whose names appear in phenomenal songs. Take, for example, women named Valerie have Valerie by Steve Winwood, Valerie by TV Girl, Valerie by Bladee, Valerie by Amy Winehouse… you get the point. Adam has Adam’s Song by Blink-182, Daniel has Elton John’s Daniel, and according to Lyrics.com, John is mentioned in over 49,000 lyrics. And Ellie has…? I bet you couldn’t name one without consulting your loyal companion, Google. Maybe my being is just too niche.
The Issue on the Table
A few years ago, listening to You and Me by the Cranberries, I thought “Man, if I were named Taylor, I would have made this my personal anthem. I would have been running with this song, and the Taylors out there don’t even know how blessed they are.” That was one of the first times I really thought deeply about the usage of names in songs and felt slight jealousy for those with really rockin’ name-songs. Part of the issue is that people with cool name-songs don’t appreciate them enough. For example, one of my coworker’s names is Julie. Every time I see her, without fail, a concert of Hey Julie by Fountains of Wayne is performed in my head. When I asked her if she knew the song, she did not. You’re pushing 60 and don’t know your God-given name-song? Blasphemous. Searches such as “Songs about a girl named Ellie,” “Ellie songs,” “Songs containing the name Ellie,” etc., have made their periodic visits in my Safari search-bar in hopes that a new result may someday appear. The current results? Not exactly ideal. I’ve tried to compromise and use my more traditional(comparatively) middle-name: Rose. And, maybe I’m just picky, but Every Rose Has Its Thorns by Poison still didn’t cut it for me. So let’s talk about the Ellie songs that are out there.
Ellie by Regi and Jake Reese
Starting off strong(?), this song begins with a whistle tune that reeks of millennial Facebook Reels. What’s worse is when the lyrics start… You know that Sombr meme where he’s like “We. Are. Young… Hey! There’s a fire in our hearts…”? That’s essentially this song. Now, I do realize the time and effort it takes to write, record, and produce a song; so, kudos to Regi and Jake Reese. I’m also fairly certain that this song was written for Regi’s daughter, but the lyric “I like the way you move, you make me feel so good” is kind of throwing me. Nevertheless, this song does not satisfy my hunger for an Ellie song.
Ellie! by iamjakehill
This is a huge step in the right direction. I’m not exactly sure what the correlation is between artists named Jake and writing songs about Ellie, but I suppose I’m not complaining.
The pros of this song:
- Definitely catchy
- Solid beat/backtrack
- Attractive album cover
- Successful on many fronts, including good bridges, beat switch, and a clear chorus
- The “!” was a great touch because that’s soooo me.
Cons
- I cannot get past some of these lyrics: “All I wanna do is go the fuck back home” + “I can’t stand it, I’m a panic/ Can you save my soul?” Among others.
- Does not explicitly state the name “Ellie” anywhere in the song aside from the title
- The essence of this song is very Blackbear 2016
So, there are undoubtedly aspects of this song that make it better than the last. Though the lyrics are a tad too corny for my personal anthem, and the overall vibe of the song is a little too “wrong side of musical.ly”-esque.
Lastly, Ellie My Love by Ray Charles.
By a landslide, my favorite of the three. Not much bad to say about this one, except the fact that it strays from my usual listening tendencies, as it is a soulful, jazzy composition. Despite this, it is still, to me, one of those songs that makes you use a wooden spoon as a microphone while cooking or dance around your bedroom. While it hasn’t yet made its way onto any of my playlists, I don’t doubt that it will grow on me and one day make it to the big leagues (A.K.A my 65 hour long playlist). Overall, I am fairly content. Thank you, Ray.
HM: The Ellie Song by The Guy Who Sings Your Name Over and Over. No elaboration.
Conclusion and a Note
While I’m still waiting for a Midwest-emo angsty hit to come out about an Ellie that resonates with my heart and soul, Ellie My Love will fill the void for now. Valerie, you are one lucky bitch.
I chose to start a blog today January 4th, 2026 on a whim and want to make it a goal to publish weekly. For years, all of the writing I’ve done has been graded. Hopefully, blogging will give me a platform to write without anyone marking off for improper modifier placement or verb agreement. I am looking to improve articulating my thoughts as well as incorporate an activity into my life that is a more beneficial past-time compared to doom-scrolling. So, a huge thank you goes out to anyone, if anyone, who read this post or any future posts.
